What It Means That ON TOP ROOFING Is an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor

Drive through Howell, Brighton or Hartland and you will see roofing yard signs from a dozen companies. Most of them can buy the same shingles we can. What they cannot buy is the Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor designation. It has to be earned, and it has to be kept every single year. Here is what it is, why it matters, and what it does for you as a homeowner in Livingston County.

The short version

Owens Corning is one of the largest shingle manufacturers in the country. They run a contractor network with tiers. The bottom tier is simply a contractor who installs their product. The next tier, Preferred, requires the contractor to pass screening. The top tier, Platinum Preferred, is the one Owens Corning reserves for roughly the top one percent of roofing contractors in the United States. ON TOP ROOFING holds that Platinum designation. What Owens Corning checks before they let a contractor in

Platinum status is not a sticker you get for ordering enough pallets. Owens Corning verifies the things a homeowner should be checking anyway, and then they keep verifying them.

• Licensing. The contractor must hold the proper state license. In Michigan that is a residential builder or maintenance and alteration license through LARA, and it must be current.
• Insurance. General liability coverage at a level Owens Corning sets, plus workers' compensation. If a crew member is hurt on your roof and the contractor does not carry comp, that can become your problem. Platinum contractors carry it.

Every shingle comes with a manufacturer warranty on the shingle itself. That is not the interesting part. The interesting part is who is allowed to offer the Owens Corning Platinum Protection Roofing System Limited Warranty. Only Platinum Preferred Contractors can.

Here is why that is different from an ordinary roof warranty.

• It covers the whole system, not just the shingle. When we install an Owens Corning roofing system, the underlayment, starter strip, hip and ridge shingles, ice and water barrier and ventilation are all Owens Corning components installed together. The warranty covers them as a system.
• Workmanship is backed by the manufacturer. A normal workmanship warranty is only as good as the roofing company that wrote it. If that company closes, the paper means nothing. Under Platinum Protection, Owens Corning stands behind the workmanship for a set number of years. One of the largest building-material manufacturers in the country is backing the labor on your roof, not just a truck with a logo on it.
• It is transferable. When you sell your home in Howell, Brighton, Pinckney or anywhere else we work, the warranty can transfer to the buyer. Ask any realtor in Livingston County what a transferable roof warranty does for a listing.
